Srirangam

Srirangam, picturesque island between the cauvery and its distributary, the kollidam, 5 kms north of trichy, has the world's largest temple complex dedicated to lord Sri Renganathaswamy. This temple, foremost among the 108 Divya Kshetras according to Vaishnavite tradition, is spread across an area of 2.5 sq.kms. Enclosed by seven rectangular walled courtyards, this temple has 21 gopurams that include the Raja Gopuram(consecrated in 1987) being the world's tallest temple tower scaling a height of 73 metres plus.
The " Boologa Vaigundam " as it is cherished is vibrant throughout the year with some festivities or other. The most popular among the festivals is the " Vaikunta Ekadesi" celebrations slated in the month of December - January for a period of 21 days. The colossal temple complex is a treasure trove of art and architecture belonging to the different schools of Chola, Pandia, the Pallavas, Hoishalas, the vijayanagara, the Nayaks and that too of the contemprorary period. A huge golden Vimanam(Dome) crowns the sanctum sanctorum and the rich collection of jewels owned by this temple is unique and includes some fine pieces of craftsmanship and tradition.
